Currently the "Create space - Flood Area" only works on geometry in the active model. I'd be nice to also be able to use it with referenced geometry.
See also Idea 138 - Create wall from space in Referenced File.
Making this possible would probably mean no associativity can be maintained to the "bounding" geometry. Although it might be interesting to have some kind of "cached" bounding geometry, that can be refreshed based on active references on a later time.
My reasoning for keeping the spaces separated from the rest of the (architectural) model is to simply have a "Spaces" model that can be used in combination with Structural model, Architectural model or MEP model(s). If I'd put them in the Architectural model, then it will always be fooling around with level visibility if I don't want to show the architectural elements (for example on structural drawings) where I do want to show the room name/numbers.

Hello Johann,
Thank you for your reply. If I follow the workflow you describe in your last post, it is updating the space by referenced geometry. I tested it in OBD Update 10.1.
Could you please provide us with a screenshot, film or dgn file showing a problem with updating the space by referenced geometry? Thank you.
Hello Johannes,
Yes of course you can place a new space by flood. But can you update an existing one? Workflow:
Create geometry in file A
Create space by flood in file B (where file A is a reference)
Change geometry in file A + add another wall
?? update space in file B => This is what is not working. While it does work when everything is in the same design file.
If the "convert to non-associative space" as wel as "convert to associative" would work then we can use that as a workaround in case the space isn't automatically updated.
Hello Johann,
Thank you for your update. If I place new geometry in the file that is referenced and reload the reference in the active file, then I can place a new space by flood area in the active file although the wall just has been placed in the referenced file. If you have issues, please provide more information or create a new Service Case and attach data to it.
The convert to non-associative space functionality does not work with spaces created by referenced files. I think this is WAD but will double-check.
Hello Johannes,
Thank you for the information. I have tested on a fresh install of U10.01 where I can confirm it works for referenced files.
There is one exception however. When adding new geometry a space in the same model can adapt and take into consideration the newly added geometry. While a space in another model (that uses the first model with geometry as a reference) can't adapt. Or so it seems.
Also, the button "convert to non-associative" space doesn't appear to be working when the geometry is in a reference. Is that WAD?
All,
There is good news! In OpenBuildings Designer Update 10 and newer the create space by flood on referenced geometry works fine. Activating the reference containing the walls and changing it leads to an immediate update of the space geometry in the master file. The same can be seen if the file containing the walls is changed and the reference of this file is updated accordingly in the master file.
