Opening placement - Sense Distance = 0

As discussed in this forum post https://communities.bentley.com/products/building/building_analysis___design/f/aecosim-speedikon-forum/243581/obd-u10-wall-opening-cuts-compound-slab

It is currently not possible to create an opening with "Sense distance = 0". Which means that adjoining walls, floor/slabs, ... will always be cut as well.

Please provide option for 0 value that will be interpreted that it only cuts the wall where the opening is placed into.

(Related bug 1165125 [Regression]Wall opening cuts through the compound slab.)

How frequently will feature be used? A few times a week

    Hi Johan,
I can reproduce the described problem designing your example of a wall with three layers and three openings of different size next to another. There are two workarounds:
    1. Create a 2 mm smaller opening in the middle wall. See screenshot below.

    2. Create a parametric cell and place it as an opening.

We will evaluate this idea for future OpenBuildings Designer releases.

If I remember correct all elements within the sence area are cut.

The idea with 0-input is breaking with the 'all' in above and a cut is only done in the element the door/window is placed in.

    Hi Johannes,

When setting the distance to 0.1, it will still cut trough walls that are against the first wall.
An example might be three walls:

    • Structural/inner wall with a certain opening (1m x 2m)

    • Insulation where opening must be a bit larger (1,1m x 2,05m)

    • Outer layer/cladding where opening must be smaller again (1m x 2m)

I don't think there currently is any way to achieve this.

If allowing Sense Distance = 0 can mean that only the the element in which the opening is placed gets cut, then we could create three different openings.

    Hi Johan,

Thank you for posting this idea. We have explored and discussed your idea. The sense distance can be reduced to e.g. 0.1, depending on the accuracy of the design file units. Touching elements that are larger than 0.1 mm should not be affected. Could you please provide us with a use case where a sense distance of 0.1 causes problems or unwanted results? Thank you.
The reported bug 1165125 "[Regression]Wall opening cuts through the compound slab" will be worked on separately.
