Multi-Install option

I work on approximately 7 different OBD projects, each one has a different version OBD 4, 6, 8, 10. I need to be able to install more than 1 version of MS and OBD on a single PC.

Autodesk products allow this, and it is killing Bentley users.

Bentley response was to use VDi's Sadly this is too expensive and time consuming to manage.

Simple solutions, go back to allowing MULTI INSTALS

This will also allow users to test new versions alongside production versions.

Ian

How frequently will feature be used? Several times a day
How much time will you save? Having to manage several VDis or simply NOT is very time consuming. This option would saves hours of work per week

Can this be installed with an earlier version of OBD?

    All,

We are happy that OpenBuildings Designer 2023 has been released. This build offers the requested multi-install option. You will find more information here.

    @All,

As you might have noticed MicroStation 2023, released end of June 2023, offers side-by-side installation. This means you can install MicroStation 2023 together with MicroStation CONNECT Edition on a single machine. We are currently working on OpenBuildings Designer 2023 to also offer side-by-side installation together with OBD CONNECT Edition. We plan to release OBD 2023 in Q4 2023.

    Hi.

This has just got worse for me. I now have another 4 OBD projects, each one has a different OBD version. IT have said I cannot have a VDi, they simply are TOO EXPENSIVE and hard to maintain.

I need to be able to have MULTI Installs ASAP

    Hello Ian, hello Johan,
We are investigating this important topic together with the MicroStation team. We will update you as soon as we have side-by-side installation capabilities available.

    Regards,
    Johannes

Though I understand Bentley's philosophy with forward and backward compatibility, unlike Autodesks approach, I do agree with Ian.

Certainly when a new version comes out I would rather install this alongside and then see if it makes sense to upgrade ongoing projects to a newer version. Main disadvantage of the current system is that when a single project does not allow upgrade for some reason, we can also not start new projects in the newest version. And that way we'll be stuck forever ...

@Ian, might be a good idea to post this also on the MS Ideas portal since this is not specific to OBD: https://microstation.ideas.aha.io/
